Pay-at-the-pump eliminated the full-service gas station across most of the US. Automated car washes handle the volume. The attendants who remain work at marinas, full-service stations in New Jersey and Oregon, and facilities where customer assistance and physical safety tasks still require a person. Here is what the research says about the automotive and watercraft service attendant profession in 2026, and what you can do about it.

48%
of current automotive and watercraft service attendant tasks are automatable with existing AI tools
Automotive and watercraft service attendants fuel vehicles, process payments, check fluid levels and tire pressure, operate car washes, and at marinas, manage fuel docks and assist with boat launches. The automotive end of this work has been contracting for decades — self-service fuel dispensing became the US norm during the 1980s and 1990s, and pay-at-the-pump technology made full-service gas station attendance largely obsolete. New Jersey and Oregon still require licensed attendants at most stations by state law (New Jersey's Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, 1949), which preserves those jobs in those states. Automated tunnel car washes handle the majority of car wash volume nationwide, and robotic detailing equipment is expanding at premium wash facilities. What remains: marina fuel dock operations, which involve fueling watercraft of widely varying sizes and fuel configurations, managing floating docks, and responding to spills and safety incidents under US Coast Guard regulations. Full-service station attendance in regulated states. Premium hand-detailing services at facilities where customer service expectations justify the cost. AI has not been the driver of displacement in this profession — the displacement happened earlier through mechanical automation (self-service pumps, tunnel washes). The remaining human roles persist because of regulatory mandates, the physical complexity of marina fueling, and premium service expectations that resist automation. BLS does not project growth for this occupation. The job market at the automotive end is in slow decline outside New Jersey and Oregon. Marina and watercraft service positions are more stable, sustained by the growth of recreational boating and the operational complexity of dock environments.

Industry-standard marina management platform for slip reservations, fuel sales, work orders, and customer accounts — proficiency is expected at mid-size and larger marinas
Try it ↗State-approved boating safety education — foundation knowledge for watercraft service and dock staff; some states require certification for marina employment roles involving watercraft operation
Try it ↗Coast Guard guidelines for marine fuel handling, spill prevention, and dock safety — required knowledge for marina fuel dock staff and useful for advancing to dock master roles
Try it ↗Research marine fuel handling regulations, understand marina operations management, and prepare for advancement into dock master or marina operations supervisor roles

Self-service fueling and automated car washes are mature and already dominant. Marina operations and full-service attendant roles in regulated states are largely unchanged and more stable than the automotive end.
By 2028, robotic detailing systems will handle more premium car wash work. Marina fuel dock and watercraft service roles remain human-staffed given watercraft diversity and Coast Guard safety requirements.
By 2031, most automotive service attendant tasks in unregulated markets are handled by automation. Marina, boat launch, and full-service station roles in regulated states remain, but the overall occupation is smaller than today.
New Jersey's Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act (1949) mandates licensed attendants at all gas stations in the state, citing fire safety at the time of passage. Oregon has similar requirements for most stations. These laws have preserved full-service attendant employment in those states while the rest of the country shifted to self-service decades ago.
Declining at the automotive end (gas stations, car washes) outside regulated states. Stable at the marina end, where watercraft fueling and launch operations involve physical and safety complexity that has not been automated. BLS projects modest decline for the overall occupation. Marina positions are more durable than gas station positions in self-service states.
Safe marine fuel handling — diesel and gasoline fueling of different watercraft, bilge ventilation before fueling, spill response, and familiarity with Coast Guard regulations for marine fuel docks. Dock line handling and approach assistance for boats. Dockmaster or marina management software for facilities that track slip reservations and fuel inventory. A boating safety certification from the NASBLA-approved state programme is useful for advancement.
Recreational boating is growing — registered recreational boats in the US exceeded 12 million by 2024, and marina fuel dock positions have grown with boat ownership. Premium hand-detailing services at high-end car wash facilities have also grown as a segment. These growth areas are partially offsetting continued decline in the basic gas station attendant end of the occupation.

Navya and EasyMile autonomous shuttle pods operate fixed routes at low speeds in controlled environments — airports, campuses, and dedicated transit lanes. They do not operate a 45-foot motorcoach through downtown Atlanta in construction traffic, manage a vehicle full of school children during an emergency, or navigate a street-level transit route that changes daily. CDL-licensed bus drivers are the profession most likely to be affected by autonomous vehicle technology over the long term, but the timeline is slower than the hype suggests.

Chemical Equipment Operators and Tenders
DCS and PLC automation handles routine setpoint control on reactors, distillation columns, and filtration equipment automatically. Batch management systems run standard production sequences without an operator making manual adjustments. The operator managing an unexpected process upset, responding to an interlocked shutdown during a storm, or troubleshooting why a batch result is off-specification is doing exception management work that automated systems generate alarms about but cannot resolve.
