The work that cannot be automated: deciding which cloud platform to commit to when AWS, Azure, and GCP each have strengths that depend on the organisation's trajectory; evaluating a vendor's security posture before a major contract; managing the organisational politics when engineering teams and business units want conflicting things from the same infrastructure; and building and retaining the engineering talent that makes everything else possible. IT managers who hold CISM or CISSP credentials and can operate at the intersection of technical depth and business strategy are consistently in short supply.

This is reducing the mean time to resolution for common infrastructure incidents significantly. IT managers are spending less time on incident triage and more time on capacity planning, vendor management, and strategic decisions.
Cloud migration has changed the skill set required — less hands-on infrastructure work, more cloud cost management, security configuration, and vendor relationship management. IT managers who have led successful cloud migrations and understand FinOps (cloud cost optimisation) are in strong demand. Pure on-premise expertise has declining value as most organisations move workloads to public cloud.
